10 Spooky Things (Including True Crime Books!) For You

Posted by Aryn VanDyke on

If you’re anything like me, you just can’t get enough of true crime stories. Whether it's (re)listening to Serial (especially after the latest news), reading the latest on the Golden State Killer, or anxiously awaiting the new book in the Cormoran Strike series, I am here for it. So much so that I booked a ticket to CrimeCon this weekend in Nashville, TN. Didn’t know there was such thing as CrimeCon??? Me either…until just the other month when my fellow true-crime-loving sister told me about it. If you did already know about CrimeCon then you’ve been keeping secrets and we are no longer friends. I can hardly contain my excited to hear from real life detectives, authors, and popular podcast hosts, and apparently I’m not the only one since it’s a SOLD OUT event. Didn’t get a ticket this year (or didn’t even know CrimeCon was a thing)?? No worries…here are 10 books/podcasts/docuseries to scratch your true crime itch:

1. Face of Betrayal, Lis Wiehl

true crime books, true crime podcasts, true crime tv shows, crime tv shows, domestic thrillers This book focuses on the case of a girl who disappeared while walking her dog. So obviously I will never be walking my dog ever again. But now that I’m inside all the time, I can enjoy this read! It’s like House of Cards in book form.

2. A Cry From the Dust, Carrie Stuart Parks

true crime books, true crime podcasts, true crime tv shows, crime tv shows, domestic thrillers If masks totally freak you out then this is the book for you. A super spooky muder in present day looks a whole lot like a super spooky massacre in the 1800s. There is also some secret society ish going on here to really sweeten the deal.

3. The Silkworm, Robert Galbraith

This is the second in J.K. Rowling’s Robert Galbraith’s Cormoran Strike series. If you haven’t read The Cuckoo’s Calling yet, 1) why are you still reading this post…please start. And 2) You actually will want to read that one first to get context. But on the scale of 0 to What the Actual Heck is Going On…this book is the latter. Murder. Publishing houses. MORE MURDER. It’s got it all. P.S. can anyone confirm when the TV series will come to America????

4. Hunting Charles Manson, Lis Wiehl

true crime books, true crime podcasts, true crime tv shows, crime tv shows, domestic thrillers, Charles Manson This book really brings us to a whole new level because Wiehl is investigating the case of the real-life Helter Skelter sooooo don’t go reading this one before bed. No more fake killers, this guy was real. Sleep tight!

5. Cross, James Patterson

This author needs no introduction and neither does his main character. This book in the Alex Cross series was like a missing puzzle piece. For proper context, it’s like the Infinity War to the Avengers world.

6. Any of the Nancy Drew books, Carolyn Keene

Don’t hate. We all know Nancy Drew was the OG crime character. She investigated hidden staircases, kidnappings, mysterious letters….basically all things that would send me packing in the opposite direction.

7. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Michelle McNamara

true crime books, true crime podcasts, true crime tv shows, crime tv shows, domestic thrillers So thankfully they ~finally~ caught the Golden State Killer in part thanks to McNamara’s “obsessive search.” Like, I’m obsessed with dogs, pizza, and Netflix, but now I’m obsessed with reading everything there is to know about this case.

8. The Jinx, HBO

You just HAVE to watch until the very end of the last episode. That’s all I’m going to say.

9. Serial Season 1, podcast

I feel like listening to this podcast should be required by law because it’s so good. It potentially invented the podcast craze. For the weeks that follow, your own internal monologue will have the voice of Sarah Koenig. Did you know they are moving forward with a re-trial for Adnan? Season three, here we come!

10. The Disappearance of Maura Murray, Oxygen

This is a new obsession. It’s about a girl who disappeared ~super mysteriously~ 14 years ago. She withdrew cash, left a lot of weird voicemails, parked her car in the middle of the night and was gone. Is she alive? Was she kidnapped? This show is trying to figure that out. Well there you have it. I hope you have enough to get you through the weekend (and keep you from ever leaving your home.) If you need me, I’ll be at CrimeCon! Aryn is one part digital marketer, one part musician, and honestly 100% just too cool to sit with us at lunch. When she's not being the number one dog mom this side of the Mississippi, she's probably diving into Grecian waters. She has never once had her name spelled correctly at Starbucks.
