On August 12
th, the nation settles down to enjoy the much-anticipated holiday of National Vinyl Record Day. Okay, I’ll admit it… I’d never heard of this day until I was perusing the calendar of “National Days,” but the fact of the matter is that I’m completely
there for this day.
Why?
Because vinyl records are an experience all to themselves. Audiophiles know that the sound of analog is just different (
there’s actual *~science~* behind this), and you get those sweet pops and crackles in the sound that just add warmth to anything you’re listening. And there’s something magically tactile about a record that you don’t get when you press play on your smartphone.
The feel of a vinyl record is a beautiful thing.
Also, vinyl records are making a comeback. Literally, the places that can make vinyl records
cannot keep up with demand. People have been converted to vinyl, and it ain’t a fad: it’s here to stay.
And YES I KNOW… an entire audiobook on vinyl won’t work, since a record only holds seventy-four minutes of run time, but you could totally have some rocking parts on records, and there are totally audiobooks are
already on vinyl.
Here are my top 5 nominations for audiobooks that would be great on vinyl:
Solo by Kwame Alexander
This audiobook totally lends itself to being heard on vinyl, with its prose-poetry sections and musical interludes. Excerpting the musical portions and specific sections of the text could lead to an ace abridged vinyl audiobook.
Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis
Every time I hear Rachel Hollis speak, I want to throw my hands in the air and yell, “Amen, sister!” Her spunk, wisdom, and motivation would translate into the perfect audiobook record to listen to as you get prepare for the next day’s board meeting presentation.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
Jim Dale’s narration is the one of the best I’ve ever heard, and of course Harry Potter has been a spiritual guide of sorts throughout my childhood. Highlight some of the most iconic parts (Hagrid finding Harry, the Sorting Hat, the escape from the Troll, Harry defeating Voldemort, etc) and I think you have a nice little collection of Harry Potter stories that would be endued with the warmth of analog. If I had this, I could feel like a dorky fourth-grader all over again.
How to Fix a Broken Record by Amena Brown
Amena Brown is the queen of spoken word poetry and she’s an amazing writer. I would love to hear her nuggets of truth from the
How to Fix a Broken Record audiobook on vinyl. This would be a record that I would make sure not the break (see what I did there???).
Johnny Cash Reads the New Testament
It’s Johnny Cash reading the Bible. What more could you possibly want? His gravelly voice via analog would be pure MAGIC.
What about you? What audiobook on vinyl would you love to hear?
